ANALYSIS: When you talk about the elite teams in college basketball this year, West Virginia most definitely is in the conversation. They are ranked #10 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 26-9. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 44.4), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.734 (which ranks 15th nationally), West Virginia is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
West Virginia is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked fourth in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 89 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. West Virginia has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked first in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 68.21 vs. AO. West Virginia also thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked first in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 17.75. (Predictably, this aggressive style of play tends to result in too many fouls -- the team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 34.66, ranked #336 in the country -- so they need to be wary of opponents that can convert from the foul line.) West Virginia lastly does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 11.63 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 15th in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 5.3% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 42nd) as well.
West Virginia plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 34th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 112 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. West Virginia does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 37.37 vs. AO, they are ranked second in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 67.0% of their attempts. West Virginia also appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 23.28 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked second in the NCAA), and they convert 11.6% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked third) as well. West Virginia will lastly routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is ninth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.1% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, West Virginia often performs better than normal. West Virginia is more efficient than usual 81% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 95.39. In their other contests, West Virginia performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
West Virginia does better vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.82, West Virginia performs above average 72% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
West Virginia performs better against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 9.64, West Virginia is more efficient than normal 79% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 38% of the time.
