ANALYSIS: A borderline top-25 caliber team, Wisconsin will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. Carrying a record of 21-10, they are currently rated #27 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.5), they're currently ranked as our #10 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.765 (the ninth-highest in the country), Wisconsin has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Favoring a style of play that will try to grind things to a crawl (the 11th-slowest pace in D1), Wisconsin has been a force on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 23rd in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 90 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Wisconsin is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.78 vs. AO, they are currently rated 17th in the country in that category. Wisconsin will also take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 32.7% of their mid-range jumpers (26th in the nation), 53.6% of their near-proximity chances (38th), and 39.6% of their total shots from the field (28th). If Wisconsin does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.54 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 11th-worst in the college game.
Wisconsin plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 37th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 108 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Wisconsin is superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 11th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 42.5% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. Wisconsin is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 31st nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 36.5% of their attempts from there vs. AO. The team will try to shoot a fair amount of threes, too. Roughly 43.7% of their field goal attempts vs. AO are from long, giving the team a top-50 ranking in that category.
Wisconsin has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked third from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Wisconsin performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 317th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Wisconsin often performs worse than normal. Wisconsin is more efficient than usual 20% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 55.75%. In their other contests, Wisconsin performs better than the norm 75% of the time.
Wisconsin does better vs. clubs that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When playing squads that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 63.03%, Wisconsin performs above average 82% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
Wisconsin performs better against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 28.18, Wisconsin is more efficient than normal 80% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 33% of the time.
