ANALYSIS: As one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, Bryant should be a pushover for the average-to-good squads in Division I. They have a record of 3-28 and are ranked tenth from the bottom overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the NEC (average ranking 275.5).
Bryant has one of the most inept defenses in the NCAA. Allowing about 118 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they're ranked way down at #350 in defensive efficiency. Bryant allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 41.9% of their three-pointers (second from the bottom in the nation), 68.4% of their near-proximity attempts (sixth from the bottom), and 50.6% of their total shots from the field (fifth from the bottom). Bryant also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 8.3% of all second-chance opportunities (302nd nationally).
Bryant doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #305 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Bryant won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 325th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 53.1% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 40.8% of their total attempts vs. AO. Bryant also struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 21.75 vs. AO, they are 321st in the overall rankings for that category.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Bryant does worse vs. clubs that find ways to get to the free throw line. When playing squads that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.78, Bryant performs above average 30% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
Bryant performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.09%, Bryant is more efficient than normal 57% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
