ANALYSIS:
Marquette is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. They are ranked #12 (out of 362) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 27-10. Of the 11 schools in the Big East (average ranking 73.5), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.729 (the ninth-highest in the country), Marquette has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.

Marquette is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated 17th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 118 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Marquette is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. Though they're most successful shooting the mid-range jumper (47.0% vs. AO, third in the country), the team also makes 37.0% of their three-pointers (46th), 63.9% of their near-proximity chances (32nd), and 49.9% of their total shots from the field (ninth) vs. AO. Marquette will also make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 29th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If Marquette does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.10 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 33rd-worst in college hoops.

Marquette plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 18th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Marquette is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.14 vs. AO, they are currently rated tenth in the country in that category. Marquette will also take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 35.5% of their mid-range jumpers (37th in the nation), 52.3% of their near-proximity chances (26th), and 40.1% of their total shots from the field (23rd).

Marquette has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 314th in the country in positive momentum. On the road, Marquette performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 351st in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Marquette performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.07%, Marquette is more efficient than normal 9% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 54% of the time.
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Marquette usually performs better than average. Marquette is more efficient than normal 52% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 31.90%. In all other contests, Marquette performs better than average 17% of the time.
Marquette is typically worse vs. teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint. Against foes that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.26%, Marquette performs above their norm 25% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 59% of the time.
