ANALYSIS: Marquette is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. Carrying a record of 19-13, they are currently rated #32 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 56.5), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Marquette will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 118 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the squad is rated #8 in offensive efficiency. Marquette is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They convert 44.2% of their three-pointers (first in the nation), 65.3% of their near-proximity attempts (42nd), and 49.7% of their total shots from the field (12th) vs. AO. Marquette is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.2% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 11th nationally in free throw percentage.
Though they're not quite as efficient defensively as they are offensively, Marquette still does OK when the opposition has possession of the ball. The team ranks 121st nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Marquette does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 33rd in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.60. Marquette has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 34th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.7% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (33.5%) will be from mid-range. If Marquette does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 66.1% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 32nd-worst in that category as a result.
On the road, Marquette performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 338th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Marquette is typically better vs. teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. Against foes that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.25%, Marquette performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 24% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Marquette often performs worse than normal. Marquette is more efficient than usual 32% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.87. In their other contests, Marquette performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
Marquette does better vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.10%, Marquette performs above average 70% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 32% of the time.
