ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Merrimack likely fits the bill. Their record this season is 14-16, and the club is ranked 308th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 10 schools in the NEC (average ranking 281.6), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Merrimack. The team is ranked 325th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Merrimack struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 32.6% of their mid-range jumpers (341st in the nation), 52.8% of their near-proximity chances (330th), and 40.4% of their total shots from the field (311th) vs. AO. Merrimack is also not one of the better teams when it comes to sinking foul shots. Converting just 66.6% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #326 overall in free throw percentage.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Merrimack still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #253 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Merrimack is one of the very worst teams in the game when it comes to preventing opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 7.8% of all second-chance opportunities (third from the bottom nationally), and with a rating of 17.00, they're ninth from the bottom in potential points surrendered off of the offensive boards as well. Merrimack also commits too many fouls, which leads to plentiful free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 27.33 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #310 in the country in that category. If Merrimack does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 14.91 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 28th-best in college basketball.
Merrimack has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #28 ranking in positive momentum. Merrimack has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 348th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. On the road, Merrimack performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 32nd in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Merrimack is typically better vs. teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively. Against foes that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 105.46, Merrimack performs above their norm 75% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 35% of the time.
When facing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Merrimack often performs better than normal. Merrimack is more efficient than usual 75% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 40.49%. In their other contests, Merrimack performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
Merrimack does better vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.31, Merrimack performs above average 75% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
