ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Xavier has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. Haslametrics has them ranked 42nd overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 23-13. Of the 11 schools in the Big East (average ranking 66.1), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Xavier this year is offense. The team is ranked 45th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 108 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Xavier does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 28.73 vs. AO, they are ranked 13th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 69.0% of their attempts. Xavier is also an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 41.9% of their mid-range jumpers (30th in the nation), 65.7% of their near-proximity chances (20th), and 47.1% of their total shots from the field (31st) vs. AO.
Xavier plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 57th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Xavier does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.55 vs. AO, they are currently rated 27th in the country in that category. Xavier has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 51st in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.5% of their attempts from close-up.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
