ANALYSIS: This website places Xavier in the top 25% of all NCAA college basketball teams this year. They have a record of 24-14 and are ranked 38th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 10) in the Big East (average ranking 56.5). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.784 (which ranks seventh nationally), Xavier is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
The primary strength for Xavier this year is offense. The team is ranked 34th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 112 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Xavier does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 34.03 vs. AO, they are ranked second in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 68.7%. Xavier will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 16th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 61.1% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category.
Xavier plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 60th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 96 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Xavier does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 20th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.3% of their attempts from afar. Xavier also does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 12.18 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 25th in the country).
Xavier has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #42 ranking in positive momentum. When playing on the road, Xavier performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 310th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Xavier performs better against squads that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.68, Xavier is more efficient than normal 71% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 29% of the time.
When playing teams that prefer the outside shot, Xavier usually performs worse than average. Xavier is more efficient than normal 18% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.05. In all other contests, Xavier performs better than average 59% of the time.
Xavier is typically worse vs. teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.54, Xavier performs above their norm 35% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
