ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Vermont should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 10-5, and the club is ranked 116th overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 10) in the America East (average ranking 231.0). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.295 (which ranks 333rd nationally), Vermont has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Vermont has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #77 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 105 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Vermont is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.8% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 16th nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-50 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 28.23 vs. AO. Vermont also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.59, which ranks #30 in the country. If Vermont does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.54 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 29th-worst in college hoops.
Vermont is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 167th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Vermont is one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 36th in the NCAA). Vermont has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 72nd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.8% of their attempts from close-up. If Vermont does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's troubles stopping opponents from converting mid-range jumpers. AO will make good on 43.6% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the squad ranks 36th-worst in that category because of it.
Vermont has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 347th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. When playing on the road, Vermont has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 13th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
