ANALYSIS: Vermont has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. They are ranked #82 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 26-7. Of the nine schools in the America East (average ranking 252.4), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
The primary strength for Vermont is defense. The team is ranked 64th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Vermont is a solid rebounding team that will deny the opposition chances to score off of offensive rebounds. They have a rating of 10.84 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 39th in the country). Vermont has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 45th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.1% of their attempts from close-up. If Vermont does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.77 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 18th-worst in the college game.
Vermont plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 97th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Vermont will make a concerted effort to fire off quite a few three-pointers each game. The team ranks 43rd in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 33.4% from beyond the arc vs. AO. If Vermont does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.21 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 44th-worst in college hoops.
Vermont has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 308th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Vermont does better vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.88%, Vermont performs above average 76% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
Vermont performs better against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.55, Vermont is more efficient than normal 80% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 41% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Vermont usually performs better than average. Vermont is more efficient than normal 83% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.81%. In all other contests, Vermont performs better than average 45% of the time.
