ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but W. Illinois should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Carrying a record of 10-17, they are currently rated #229 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the nine schools in the Summit League (average ranking 164.9), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Though their defense is far from abysmal, W. Illinois is not really proficient on that end of the court either. Allowing about 106 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they are ranked #236 in defensive efficiency. W. Illinois commits too many fouls, which leads to plentiful free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 33.60 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #320 in the country in that category. W. Illinois also does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 312th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.8% of their attempts from afar. Luckily, AO will take nowhere near as many threes as they typically would, and only 31.5% of AO's field goal attempts will come from downtown.
W. Illinois doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #231 in the nation in offensive efficiency. W. Illinois does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 11.60 in potential points scored off of second chances (313th nationally).
W. Illinois is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 32nd in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. On the road, W. Illinois performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 44th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
W. Illinois performs better against squads that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.88%, W. Illinois is more efficient than normal 71% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter, W. Illinois usually performs worse than average. W. Illinois is more efficient than normal 33% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.99. In all other contests, W. Illinois performs better than average 78% of the time.
W. Illinois is typically worse vs. teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. Against foes that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.64, W. Illinois performs above their norm 22% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 67% of the time.
