ANALYSIS:
A top-25 caliber team, Virginia Tech will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. Carrying a record of 23-13, they are currently rated #24 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 82.1), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.

With a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 19th-slowest pace in D1), Virginia Tech is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated 21st in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 111 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Virginia Tech is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 38.8% of their three-pointers (fifth in the nation), 44.1% of their mid-range chances (seventh), and 48.0% of their total shots from the field (18th) vs. AO.

Virginia Tech plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 54th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia Tech does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.66 vs. AO, they are currently rated 29th in the country in that category. Virginia Tech is also a solid rebounding team that will deny the opposition chances to score off of offensive rebounds. They have a rating of 10.87 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 41st in the country).
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech often performs better than normal. Virginia Tech is more efficient than usual 64% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.20. In their other contests, Virginia Tech performs better than the norm 24% of the time.
Virginia Tech does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.04%, Virginia Tech performs above average 20% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 56% of the time.
