ANALYSIS: Virginia has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Carrying a record of 21-14, they are currently rated #78 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 82.1), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
Virginia has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #60 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings and preferring an extremely deliberate pace (the second-slowest in D1), they will allow about 94 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Virginia is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.12 vs. AO, they are currently rated 22nd in the country in that category. Virginia has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 36th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.9% of their attempts from that distance.
Virginia plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 89th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 105 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 31st in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-50 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 41.5% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. Virginia is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.3% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 49th nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
