ANALYSIS: There aren't many teams in the country that have been as strong as Virginia this year. Haslametrics has them ranked ninth overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 23-11. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 44.4), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.770 (the 12th-highest in the country), Virginia has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Virginia will suffocate most opponents with its stifling defense. Allowing roughly 84 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and exhibiting a preference for an extremely deliberate pace (the slowest in D1), this squad is rated #2 in defensive efficiency. Virginia does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 9.55 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked first in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.1% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked fifth) as well. Virginia will also put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. Defending the long-ball is their strength (allowing 29.9% shooting from three vs. AO, sixth-best in the nation), but the team also harasses AO into converting just 52.8% of their near-proximity attempts (31st), 33.0% of their mid-range chances (44th), and 38.4% of their total shots from the field (tenth).
Virginia plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 38th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 112 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Virginia is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 40.6% of their three-pointers (tenth in the nation), 39.8% of their mid-range chances (38th), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (37th) vs. AO. Virginia is also one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 15th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.28 vs. AO. If Virginia does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 11.36 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 37th-worst in college hoops.
Virginia has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked sixth from the bottom in positive momentum. When playing on the road, Virginia performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 316th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Virginia performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 68.67%, Virginia is more efficient than normal 35% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Virginia usually performs better than average. Virginia is more efficient than normal 73% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.69. In all other contests, Virginia performs better than average 35% of the time.
Virginia is typically worse vs. teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint. Against foes that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 63.76%, Virginia performs above their norm 27% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 63% of the time.
