ANALYSIS: Wagner presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. Carrying a record of 10-20, they are currently rated #312 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 10) in the NEC (average ranking 260.3).
Defense is not exactly a strength for Wagner this year. The team is ranked 321st in defensive efficiency and allows more than 109 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Wagner fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 37.97 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #348 in the country in that category. Wagner also allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are at their worst when defending outside the paint, allowing AO to convert 38.8% of their three-pointers (339th in the nation), 40.0% of their mid-range chances (329th), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (331st). If Wagner does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 76.40 vs. AO, which ranks 12th-best in college basketball.
Wagner doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #276 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Wagner will have a really tough time winning games when taking into consideration their shooting percentage near the basket. The team is ranked third from the bottom in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 47.9% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 38.7% of their total attempts vs. AO. If Wagner does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 21.24 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks ninth in all of college hoops.
When playing on the road, Wagner performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 318th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Wagner often performs worse than normal. Wagner is more efficient than usual 19% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 96.67. In their other contests, Wagner performs better than the norm 69% of the time.
Wagner does better vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.40, Wagner performs above average 58% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 10% of the time.
Wagner performs worse against squads that convert well from outside the arc. When facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.97%, Wagner is more efficient than normal 11% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 55% of the time.
