ANALYSIS:
As one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, VMI should be a pushover for the average-to-good squads in Division I. They have a record of 4-28 and are ranked seventh from the bottom overall (out of 362) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Southern (average ranking 191.6), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.

Offense comes as a real struggle to VMI this year. The team is rated sixth from the bottom in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 89 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. VMI tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 17.64, which ranks second from the bottom in D1. VMI also does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.03 vs. AO, they are eighth from the bottom in the overall rankings for that category. VMI lastly happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 347th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 80.77 vs. AO.

Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, VMI still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 111 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #302 in the nation in defensive efficiency. VMI allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #315 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 46.8% of their total attempts from the floor.

VMI has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 336th in the country in positive momentum.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, VMI usually performs worse than average. VMI is more efficient than normal 45% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 8.98. In all other contests, VMI performs better than average 89% of the time.
VMI is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.70%, VMI performs above their norm 44% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 82% of the time.
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, VMI often performs worse than normal. VMI is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.84%. In their other contests, VMI performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
