ANALYSIS: VMI is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. They have a record of 7-25 and are ranked 352nd overall (out of 363) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Southern (average ranking 210.0), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for VMI this year. The team ranks third from the bottom in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 115 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. VMI can be counted on to make some of the inferior shooting teams look pretty capable. The team ranks in the bottom-50 in each of the four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They allow AO to make 37.0% of their three-pointers (37th-worst in the nation), 41.1% of their mid-range jumpers (48th-worst), 67.2% of their near-proximity chances (second-worst), and 46.9% of their total shots from the field (39th-worst). VMI also allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 342nd in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.80 vs. AO. If VMI does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 12.08 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 49th-best in college hoops.
VMI doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #320 in the nation in offensive efficiency. VMI does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 18.22 vs. AO, they are second from the bottom in the overall rankings for that category. VMI also tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.11, which ranks seventh from the bottom in D1. VMI lastly does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.1% of all second-chance opportunities (tenth from the bottom nationally). If VMI does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully get off shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of 87.48 vs. AO, which ranks #49 in college basketball.
VMI has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 332nd in the country in positive momentum. On the road, VMI performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 36th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
