ANALYSIS: VMI is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. They have a record of 11-21 and are ranked 310th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Southern (average ranking 185.9), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for VMI this year. The team ranks 329th in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 113 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. VMI allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 37.8% of their three-pointers (320th in the nation), 64.5% of their near-proximity attempts (312th), and 48.2% of their total shots from the field (335th).
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, VMI still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #245 in the nation in offensive efficiency. VMI does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.0% of all second-chance opportunities (341st nationally), and with a rating of 10.79, they're 318th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. VMI also struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 21.61 vs. AO, they are 313th in the overall rankings for that category.
VMI has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked 15th in positive momentum because of it. On the road, VMI performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 334th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, VMI usually performs better than average. VMI is more efficient than normal 90% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.09. In all other contests, VMI performs better than average 37% of the time.
VMI is typically better vs. teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. Against foes that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.28%, VMI performs above their norm 77% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 38% of the time.
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, VMI often performs better than normal. VMI is more efficient than usual 75% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.42%. In their other contests, VMI performs better than the norm 41% of the time.
