ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Richmond is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Their record this season is 13-20, and the club is ranked 203rd overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 158.5), they're currently ranked as our #11 team in the conference.
Richmond will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 139th in offensive efficiency and scores more than 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Richmond is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 22nd in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 65.7% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Richmond also has a keen ability to drain field goals between the three-point line and the low post. The squad is ranked 31st nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 39.9% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. If Richmond does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.06 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 19th-worst in college hoops.
The defense for Richmond, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 269th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 108 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Richmond fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked 337th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 66.5% of their attempts from close-up. Richmond also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #325 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 47.8% of their total attempts from the floor. If Richmond does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their willingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of steals. The team has a solid rating of 14.16 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 46th-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Richmond performs worse against squads that convert well from outside the arc. When facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.73%, Richmond is more efficient than normal 25% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 62% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Richmond usually performs better than average. Richmond is more efficient than normal 73% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 106.34. In all other contests, Richmond performs better than average 36% of the time.
