ANALYSIS: This website places VCU in the top 25% of all NCAA college basketball teams this year. They have a record of 19-7 and are ranked 49th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the A-10 (average ranking 128.8), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
VCU is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked 13th in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 89 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. VCU thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked third in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 16.52. VCU will also wreak havoc with many opponents' shooting percentages this year. And it doesn't really matter where the shots originate; the team ranks in the top-25 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.4% of their three-pointers (22nd in the nation), 33.2% of their mid-range shots (24th), 53.1% of their near-proximity attempts (24th), and 39.5% of their total shots from the field (21st). If VCU does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from obtaining second-chance opportunities via offensive rebounds. The squad has a rating of 15.90 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 19th-worst in college hoops.
VCU is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 106th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. VCU will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is fifth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 61.1% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. VCU is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 40th nationally).
VCU is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked eighth in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, VCU often performs worse than normal. VCU is more efficient than usual 13% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 15.86. In their other contests, VCU performs better than the norm 61% of the time.
VCU does better vs. clubs that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 40.43%, VCU performs above average 78% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
VCU performs worse against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.97%, VCU is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
