ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, JMU is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Carrying a record of 19-14, they are currently rated #205 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 10) in the Colonial (average ranking 207.0).
Based on the data, JMU will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 101 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #159 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. JMU has been generally quite good when shooting the three-pointer. They're ranked 51st nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO. The team will try to shoot a fair amount of threes, too. Roughly 37.3% of their field goal attempts vs. AO are from long, giving the team a top-100 ranking in that category. If JMU does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 77.50 vs. AO, which ranks 26th-worst in college basketball.
The defense for JMU, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 271st in defensive efficiency, allowing about 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. JMU struggles on occasion to deny opponents opportunities to shoot from the floor. The team is ranked 319th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.65 vs. AO. JMU also can be weak on rebounding, giving the opposition too many chances to score off of the offensive glass. The club has a rating of 17.84 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (319th nationally).
JMU has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 305th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, JMU has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked fourth in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
JMU does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.25%, JMU performs above average 29% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 68% of the time.
JMU performs worse against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.63%, JMU is more efficient than normal 37% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 71% of the time.
When playing teams that prefer the outside shot, JMU usually performs better than average. JMU is more efficient than normal 65% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 1.97. In all other contests, JMU performs better than average 31% of the time.
