ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Utah is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. They have a record of 17-14 and are ranked 93rd overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 106.2).
Utah has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #27 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 113 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Utah boasts one of the better offensive field goal percentages in the college game. The squad is ranked 30th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 47.3% of their attempts vs. AO. Utah is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 39th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.4% of their attempts from there vs. AO. The team will try to shoot a fair amount of threes, too. Roughly 44.5% of their field goal attempts vs. AO are from long, giving the team a top-50 ranking in that category.
Unfortunately, Utah is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 229th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Utah allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 335th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.63 vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Utah does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 96.31, Utah performs above average 68% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 11% of the time.
Utah performs better against squads that favor a faster tempo. When facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 67.36, Utah is more efficient than normal 70% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 18% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Utah usually performs better than average. Utah is more efficient than normal 79% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.24%. In all other contests, Utah performs better than average 29% of the time.
