ANALYSIS: If you see UTEP on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. They have a record of 20-14 and are ranked 181st overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 179.5).
If there is a strength for UTEP this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 101st in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 97 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UTEP has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 19th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 78.29 vs. AO. UTEP also does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 45th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.92. (Predictably, this aggressive style of play tends to result in too many fouls -- the team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 27.78, ranked #317 in the country -- so they need to be wary of opponents that can convert from the foul line.)
The offense for UTEP, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 224th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UTEP doesn't quite measure up to the rest of the field in scoring points off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.6% of all second-chance opportunities (302nd nationally). If UTEP does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 76.0% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #37 in Division I.
UTEP has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #50 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UTEP is typically worse vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.95%, UTEP performs above their norm 24% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 60% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter, UTEP often performs better than normal. UTEP is more efficient than usual 64% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.05. In their other contests, UTEP performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
