ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, UTSA is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. They have a record of 11-21 and are ranked 256th overall (out of 362) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the AAC (average ranking 135.3), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
UTSA does not provide much of a challenge on defense. They are ranked at #325 in efficiency on that end of the court and give up about 112 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. UTSA does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 332nd nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.1% of their attempts from afar. UTSA also struggles on occasion to deny opponents opportunities to shoot from the floor. The team is ranked 320th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.72 vs. AO.
Even though the team ranks considerably higher in offensive efficiency, UTSA isn't a powerhouse on that end of the floor either. Scoring roughly 105 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #187 in the nation in offensive efficiency. UTSA has a hard time converting field goals attempts on offense. The team is rated #322 in the country in field goal percentage, making good on a meager 40.7% of their attempts vs. AO. If UTSA does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's knack for obtaining second-chance opportunities off of their frequent misses. The squad has a rating of 17.90 in potential points off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 14th in all of college hoops.
UTSA has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked fifth in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
UTSA is typically better vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.69%, UTSA performs above their norm 64% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 11% of the time.
When facing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, UTSA often performs worse than normal. UTSA is more efficient than usual 28% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.32. In their other contests, UTSA performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
UTSA does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.75%, UTSA performs above average 62% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
