ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Southern Utah likely fits the bill. Their record this season is 6-27, and the club is ranked 330th overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 12 schools in the Big Sky (average ranking 244.5), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Southern Utah has one of the most inept defenses in the NCAA. Allowing about 115 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they're ranked way down at #344 in defensive efficiency. Southern Utah allows opposing teams far too many easy chances from the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four main defensive field goal shooting categories. AO will convert a healthy 40.8% of their three-pointers (fifth from the bottom in the nation), 65.0% of their near-proximity attempts (309th), and 49.1% of their total shots from the field (336th). Southern Utah also fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 35.88 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #346 in the country in that category.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Southern Utah still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 96 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #276 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Southern Utah shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 32.6% of their mid-range jumpers (328th in the nation), 49.4% of their near-proximity chances (fifth from the bottom), and 39.6% of their total shots from the field (327th) vs. AO. Southern Utah also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 12.76, which ranks 308th in D1.
On the road, Southern Utah performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 27th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Southern Utah is typically better vs. teams that effectively clean the offensive glass. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.46, Southern Utah performs above their norm 68% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 22% of the time.
When facing teams that favor a faster tempo, Southern Utah often performs better than normal. Southern Utah is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 69.15. In their other contests, Southern Utah performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
