ANALYSIS: Tennessee is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. Their record this season is 15-19, and the club is ranked 97th overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 14 schools in the SEC (average ranking 79.9), they're currently ranked as our #11 team in the conference.
Tennessee succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 86th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Tennessee has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 26th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.94 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 43.9% of them vs. AO. Tennessee also has a keen ability to drain field goals between the three-point line and the low post. The squad is ranked 33rd nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 40.1% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. The team will take a fair amount of shots from those in-between locations, too. Approximately 32.5% of their attempts vs. AO are of the mid-range variety, which puts the team in the top-100 in that category nationally.
Tennessee plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 114th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Tennessee has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 43rd in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.6% of their attempts from that distance. Tennessee has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #55 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.0% of their total attempts from the floor.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Tennessee often performs better than normal. Tennessee is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.86. In their other contests, Tennessee performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
Tennessee does better vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.73, Tennessee performs above average 72% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
Tennessee performs better against squads that shoot the ball well from the field. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 46.16%, Tennessee is more efficient than normal 77% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 38% of the time.
