ANALYSIS: TCU is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. They have a record of 21-13 and are ranked 38th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 30.2), they're currently ranked as our #6 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.720 (which ranks 12th nationally), TCU is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
TCU is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked 24th in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 91 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. TCU has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 41st in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.8% of their attempts from afar. TCU also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #44 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.3% of their total attempts from the floor.
TCU plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 65th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. TCU does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.1% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 18th nationally), and with a rating of 16.71, they're 33rd in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. TCU also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 33rd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.34 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-75 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 46.2% of their total attempts vs. AO.
TCU has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #26 ranking in positive momentum. TCU is also one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 44th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, TCU often performs worse than normal. TCU is more efficient than usual 27% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.84. In their other contests, TCU performs better than the norm 65% of the time.
TCU does better vs. clubs that effectively clean the offensive glass. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.57, TCU performs above average 68% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
TCU performs worse against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.00%, TCU is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 68% of the time.
