ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, TCU should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. They have a record of 12-21 and are ranked 129th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 44.4), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
TCU will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 74th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. TCU has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 19th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.08 vs. AO. TCU is also a solid rebounding team that will deny the opposition chances to score off of offensive rebounds. They have a rating of 12.99 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 49th in the country).
The offense for TCU, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 206th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 99 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. TCU doesn't do a great job maximizing opportunities to score when in possession. The team is nationally ranked 280th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 79.75 vs. AO. If TCU does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 33.04 vs. AO, which ranks 27th in the country.
TCU has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 330th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. On the road, TCU performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 339th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, TCU often performs better than normal. TCU is more efficient than usual 62% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.93. In their other contests, TCU performs better than the norm 17% of the time.
TCU does better vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 9.98, TCU performs above average 60% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
TCU performs worse against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 30.24, TCU is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 61% of the time.
