ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, TCU is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Carrying a record of 18-15, they are currently rated #48 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 10) in the Big 12 (average ranking 42.3).
TCU has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #49 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 94 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. TCU does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked eighth in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 50.7% of their attempts from close-up. And to capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from the inside more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a big portion of them (39.1%) will be from short-distance. TCU has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #51 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.1% of their total attempts from the floor.
TCU plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 59th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. TCU does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 37.27 vs. AO, they are ranked second in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, the team struggles mightily from the line, making only 62.7% of their attempts (14th-worst in the nation). TCU also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 8.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 23rd nationally), and with a rating of 18.26, they're 33rd in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well.
TCU has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 313th in the country in positive momentum. On the road, TCU performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 329th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
TCU does better vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.00%, TCU performs above average 82% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
TCU performs better against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 98.38, TCU is more efficient than normal 75% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 24% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, TCU usually performs better than average. TCU is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.42%. In all other contests, TCU performs better than average 22% of the time.
