ANALYSIS: A top-25 caliber adversary, BYU will likely be a stiff test for any team in Division I. They have a record of 24-8 and are ranked 22nd overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the WCC (average ranking 124.1), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
BYU is one of the very most competent offensive teams in the country. Ranked tenth in offensive efficiency, they'll rack up more than 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. BYU is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. The long-ball may be their strength (41.8% from three vs. AO, first in the nation), but the team also makes 68.9% of their near-proximity shots (fourth), 42.2% of their mid-range chances (15th), and 49.7% of their total shots from the field (third) vs. AO. BYU will also likely shoot a fair share of three-pointers each contest. The team ranks 66th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If BYU does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.07 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 14th-worst in college hoops.
BYU plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 43rd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. BYU does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 12th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 29.4% of their attempts from afar. BYU also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.5% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 16th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.71, they're 36th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. If BYU does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 65.0% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 30th-worst in that category as a result.
BYU has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 337th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, BYU often performs better than normal. BYU is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.75%. In their other contests, BYU performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
BYU does worse vs. clubs that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.39, BYU performs above average 32% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
BYU performs better against squads that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, BYU is more efficient than normal 60% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 18% of the time.
