ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, BYU should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Ranked 88th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 22-12. Of the 10 schools in the WCC (average ranking 164.9), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
While favoring one of the game's most blistering paces (the fourth-fastest in D1), the primary strength for BYU is defense. The team is ranked 87th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. BYU has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 32nd in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.9% of their attempts from afar. BYU has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #69 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.8% of their total attempts from the floor.
BYU plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 96th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 106 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. BYU is superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked seventh nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 42.2% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. They love shooting that mid-range shot, too. About 38.8% of the team's field goals vs. AO are from those in-between locations, the tenth-highest percentage in the NCAA. BYU also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 33.27 vs. AO, they are ranked eighth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. In addition, the team is in the top-100 in free throw shooting, converting a solid 73.2% of their attempts. If BYU does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 78.29 vs. AO, which ranks 37th-worst in college basketball.
BYU has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 302nd in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
BYU performs worse against squads that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.59%, BYU is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that convert well from the charity stripe, BYU usually performs worse than average. BYU is more efficient than normal 42% of the time when facing clubs that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 68.97%. In all other contests, BYU performs better than average 87% of the time.
BYU is typically worse vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.60%, BYU performs above their norm 40% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 79% of the time.
