ANALYSIS: If you see Stony Brook on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. They are ranked #205 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 18-14. Of the nine schools in the America East (average ranking 226.4), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Though their offense is far from the worst in the game, Stony Brook is not terribly gifted on that end of the court either. Scoring about 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked at #215 in offensive efficiency. Stony Brook struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 32.7% of their mid-range jumpers (320th in the nation), 53.2% of their near-proximity chances (324th), and 39.3% of their total shots from the field (333rd) vs. AO. If Stony Brook does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully get off shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of 85.51 vs. AO, which ranks #25 in college basketball.
Stony Brook doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #213 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Stony Brook commits too many fouls, which leads to plentiful free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 31.24 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #307 in the country in that category.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

Stony Brook is more efficient than usual 27% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.49. In their other contests, Stony Brook performs better than the norm 71% of the time.
Stony Brook does worse vs. clubs that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 79% of the time.
