ANALYSIS: Texas is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. Carrying a record of 22-12, they are currently rated #16 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Big 12 (average ranking 30.2), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Preferring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 23rd-slowest pace in D1), Texas is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked ninth in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 88 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Texas has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked fifth in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 76.08 vs. AO. Texas also does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 12th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.0% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (32.2%) will be from mid-range. Texas is lastly one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #20 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.3% of their total attempts from the floor. If Texas does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's tendency to send opponents to the line too much by fouling. The squad has a rating of 28.39 in defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 32nd-worst in the country.
Texas plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 27th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Texas allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.47, which ranks #15 in the country. Texas also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 27th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 87.69 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-75 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 45.6% of their total attempts vs. AO.
On the road, Texas performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 343rd in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Texas often performs better than normal. Texas is more efficient than usual 91% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.96%. In their other contests, Texas performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
Texas does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.56, Texas performs above average 30% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 91% of the time.
Texas performs better against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 88.24, Texas is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 10% of the time.
