ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, St. Peter's likely fits the bill. They have a record of 10-22 and are ranked 316th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #10 team (out of 11) in the MAAC (average ranking 271.7). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.323 (which ranks 329th nationally), St. Peter's has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
St. Peter's has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank 330th in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. St. Peter's struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 29.8% of their three-pointers (tenth from the bottom in the nation), 51.7% of their near-proximity attempts (342nd), and 40.6% of their total shots from the field (314th) vs. AO. St. Peter's is also one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 306th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 80.09 vs. AO.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, St. Peter's still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #270 in the nation in defensive efficiency. St. Peter's does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank fifth from the bottom nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 39.8% of their attempts from afar. St. Peter's also commits too many fouls, which leads to plentiful free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 30.37 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #318 in the country in that category. If St. Peter's does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 12.05 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 50th-best in college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
St. Peter's performs worse against squads that effectively clean the offensive glass. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.28, St. Peter's is more efficient than normal 17% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, St. Peter's usually performs better than average. St. Peter's is more efficient than normal 72% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 46.25%. In all other contests, St. Peter's performs better than average 29% of the time.
St. Peter's is typically better vs. teams that convert well from outside the arc. Against foes that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.84%, St. Peter's performs above their norm 72% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 29% of the time.
