ANALYSIS: When listing some of the better squads you will find in NCAA basketball this year, one can definitely make a case for Saint Mary's. They have a record of 22-12 and are ranked 30th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 10) in the WCC (average ranking 125.9).
While favoring a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 15th-slowest pace in D1), the primary strength for Saint Mary's this year is offense. The team is ranked 32nd in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 112 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Saint Mary's is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They can be considered sharpshooters out on the perimeter, converting 38.5% of their three-pointers (19th in the nation), 40.0% of their mid-range chances (30th), and 47.5% of their total shots from the field (27th) vs. AO. Saint Mary's will also make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 29th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts.
Saint Mary's plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 50th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 97 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Saint Mary's does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 11.17 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 23rd in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.5% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 30th) as well. Saint Mary's has also done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 28th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.3% of their attempts from afar. For this reason, AO takes nowhere near as many threes as they typically would -- just 32.4% of AO's field goal attempts will be from downtown.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Saint Mary's usually performs better than average. Saint Mary's is more efficient than normal 87% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.48. In all other contests, Saint Mary's performs better than average 26% of the time.
Saint Mary's is typically better vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.64, Saint Mary's performs above their norm 85% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Saint Mary's often performs worse than normal. Saint Mary's is more efficient than usual 32% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.00%. In their other contests, Saint Mary's performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
