ANALYSIS: Saint Mary's has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. They are ranked #35 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 29-6. Of the 10 schools in the WCC (average ranking 151.0), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
Saint Mary's will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 115 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and embracing an extremely deliberate pace (the fourth-slowest in D1), the squad is rated #17 in offensive efficiency. Saint Mary's is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. They make 40.2% of their three-pointers (ninth in the nation), 40.6% of their mid-range jumpers (25th), 67.0% of their near-proximity chances (13th), and 50.3% of their total shots from the field (fifth) vs. AO. Saint Mary's also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 42nd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.45 vs. AO. If Saint Mary's does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of only 22.77 vs. AO, which ranks tenth-worst in the country.
Saint Mary's is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 99th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Saint Mary's is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.79 vs. AO, they are currently rated 23rd in the country in that category. Saint Mary's has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 50th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.7% of their attempts from close-up. If Saint Mary's does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.34 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks eighth-worst in college basketball.
Saint Mary's has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 309th in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Saint Mary's performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.97%, Saint Mary's is more efficient than normal 25% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 72% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Saint Mary's usually performs worse than average. Saint Mary's is more efficient than normal 38% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.89%. In all other contests, Saint Mary's performs better than average 80% of the time.
Saint Mary's is typically worse vs. teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.06, Saint Mary's performs above their norm 38% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 80% of the time.
