ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Saint Mary's has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They have a record of 21-10 and are ranked 74th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #3 team (out of 10) in the WCC (average ranking 122.5).
The primary strength for Saint Mary's this year is offense. The team is ranked 61st in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 106 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Saint Mary's will routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is second in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 56.1% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. Saint Mary's is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 38th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.8% of their attempts from there vs. AO.
Saint Mary's is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 113th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 98 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Saint Mary's does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked fourth in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.77, they're ninth in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Saint Mary's has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 66th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.0% of their attempts from close-up. If Saint Mary's does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 8.34 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 25th-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
