ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, St. John's is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Ranked 81st overall (out of 363) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 18-15. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 11) in the Big East (average ranking 67.5).
While favoring one of the game's most blistering paces (the fastest in D1), the primary strength for St. John's is defense. The team is ranked 62nd in efficiency, allowing fewer than 97 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. St. John's thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 16th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 15.45. St. John's has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 59th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.1% of their attempts from close-up.
St. John's plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 105th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 106 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. St. John's does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 14th nationally), and with a rating of 17.44, they're 29th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. St. John's will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 18th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.3% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. If St. John's does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 12.74 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 41st-worst in the college game.
St. John's has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #43 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
