ANALYSIS: St. John's has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Haslametrics has them ranked 82nd overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 21-13. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 70.1), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
St. John's succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 83rd in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. St. John's does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.27, which ranks #26 in the country. If St. John's does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.86 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 37th-worst in college hoops.
St. John's plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 105th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. St. John's thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked ninth in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 16.28. St. John's also does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 25th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 31.7% of their attempts from that distance.
St. John's has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked ninth from the bottom in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
St. John's performs worse against squads that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02, St. John's is more efficient than normal 31% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 72% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, St. John's usually performs better than average. St. John's is more efficient than normal 80% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.83%. In all other contests, St. John's performs better than average 42% of the time.
St. John's is typically worse vs. teams that shoot the ball well from the field. Against foes that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.96%, St. John's performs above their norm 27% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 65% of the time.
