ANALYSIS:
St. John's is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. They are ranked #90 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 14-19. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 56.5), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.

While favoring a very up-tempo style of play (the 16th-fastest pace in D1), the primary strength for St. John's this year is offense. The team is ranked 80th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 106 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. St. John's is one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 42nd nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.3% of their attempts from there vs. AO. St. John's is also fairly competent protecting the ball on offense, which minimizes opportunities for the opponent to score quickly off of steals. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.43, which ranks #63 in the country.

St. John's plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 122nd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. St. John's thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 24th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.19. St. John's has also been fairly decent in preventing teams from draining shots from between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 64th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.9% of their attempts from that distance.

St. John's has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 321st in the country in positive momentum.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
St. John's is typically better vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 68.97%, St. John's performs above their norm 59% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 18% of the time.
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, St. John's often performs better than normal. St. John's is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.19%. In their other contests, St. John's performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
St. John's does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 96.41, St. John's performs above average 67% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
