ANALYSIS: North Texas is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. They are ranked #75 (out of 362) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 19-15. Of the 14 schools in the AAC (average ranking 135.3), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
North Texas has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #73 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings and preferring an extremely deliberate pace (the third-slowest in D1), they will allow about 100 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Texas does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked sixth in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.1% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (31.3%) will be from mid-range. North Texas has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #58 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.4% of their total attempts from the floor.
North Texas plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 95th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 110 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. North Texas is one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked 14th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 38.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO. North Texas also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 32nd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.72 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 44.3% of them vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
North Texas performs worse against squads that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.91%, North Texas is more efficient than normal 40% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, North Texas usually performs worse than average. North Texas is more efficient than normal 30% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 15.92. In all other contests, North Texas performs better than average 64% of the time.
