ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, North Texas should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. They are ranked #158 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 21-12. Of the 14 schools in Conference USA (average ranking 187.1), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
North Texas has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #91 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Texas does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 19th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 31.4% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (31.3%) will be from mid-range. North Texas also has been doing fairly decent work to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 74th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 81.00 vs. AO. If North Texas does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 64.2% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 50th-worst in that category as a result.
The offense for North Texas, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 224th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Texas needs improvement when it comes to draining the mid-range shot. The team is ranked 327th in field goal percentage from that distance, making only 31.6% of their mid-range attempts vs. AO. North Texas also won't enter the conversation if you're looking to list the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 309th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 31.9% of their attempts from long vs. AO.
North Texas has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 335th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
North Texas performs better against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.69%, North Texas is more efficient than normal 78% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 29% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, North Texas usually performs better than average. North Texas is more efficient than normal 57% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.85%. In all other contests, North Texas performs better than average 11% of the time.
North Texas is typically better vs. teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively. Against foes that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 101.52, North Texas performs above their norm 57% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 11% of the time.
