ANALYSIS: Houston is among the very best of the best in NCAA hoops this year. Ranked fourth overall (out of 358) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 32-6. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 11) in the AAC (average ranking 105.9).
The Houston defense will be extremely problematic for most opposing offenses. Allowing about 87 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the club is ranked seventh overall in defensive efficiency. Houston will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.4% of their three-pointers (26th in the nation), 31.9% of their mid-range shots (tenth), 54.0% of their near-proximity attempts (38th), and 37.6% of their total shots from the field (seventh). Houston also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked tenth in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.53, they're 32nd in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Houston lastly has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 17th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.93 vs. AO.
Houston plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 13th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 114 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Houston is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked second in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 90.35 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-50 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 47.3% of their total attempts vs. AO. Houston is also one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked eighth in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 67.5% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Houston lastly allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.69, which ranks #22 in the country.

CURIOUS TRENDS:
Houston does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 85.50, Houston performs above average 21% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
Houston performs better against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 83.26, Houston is more efficient than normal 75% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 32% of the time.
When playing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Houston usually performs better than average. Houston is more efficient than normal 64% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.15%. In all other contests, Houston performs better than average 23% of the time.
