ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Houston has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They are ranked #47 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 21-11. Of the 11 schools in the AAC (average ranking 117.5), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Houston this year is offense. The team is ranked 43rd in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 110 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Houston is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked tenth in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.63 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-75 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 46.4% of their total attempts vs. AO. Houston also loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked 17th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those mid-range shots goes, the team shoots a mediocre 37.5% vs. AO. Houston is lastly one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked 20th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 39.5% of their attempts from there vs. AO.
Houston plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 58th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 96 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Houston boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #50 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.8% of their total attempts from the floor. Houston also does an adequate job to prevent opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 5.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 74th in the NCAA).
Houston has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked seventh from the bottom in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:

When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Houston often performs worse than normal. Houston is more efficient than usual 8% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 103.76. In their other contests, Houston performs better than the norm 79% of the time.
