ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Southern should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. They are ranked #339 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 7-25. Of the 10 schools in the SWAC (average ranking 310.2), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Southern has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank 333rd in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 91 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Southern happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 329th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 78.99 vs. AO. Southern is also not one of the better teams when it comes to sinking foul shots. Converting just 65.9% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #325 overall in free throw percentage.
Southern doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 111 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #316 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Southern fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 34.09 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #351 in the country in that category. Southern also allows the opposition far too many easy shots from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They are exceptionally deficient defending inside the three-point line, allowing AO to make good on 40.9% of their mid-range jumpers (332nd in the nation), 68.6% of their near-proximity chances (fifth from the bottom), and 49.4% of their total shots from the field (sixth from the bottom). If Southern does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 77.24 vs. AO, which ranks seventh-best in college basketball.
Southern has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked 24th in positive momentum because of it.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Southern performs better against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.66, Southern is more efficient than normal 83% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 37% of the time.
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Southern usually performs better than average. Southern is more efficient than normal 68% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.10%. In all other contests, Southern performs better than average 22% of the time.
