ANALYSIS: South Carolina is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. They are ranked #123 (out of 357) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 6-15. Of the 14 schools in the SEC (average ranking 61.5), they're currently ranked as our #13 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.792 (the 20th-highest in the country), South Carolina has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Based on their performances this year, South Carolina will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 98 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and favoring a feverish pace (the eighth-fastest in D1), they currently occupy the #127 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. South Carolina has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked fifth in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 75.49 vs. AO. South Carolina also does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 9.91 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 17th in the country). South Carolina lastly thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 24th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 15.03.
South Carolina plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 166th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. South Carolina appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 18.27 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked seventh in the NCAA), and they convert 6.9% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 36th) as well. South Carolina is also one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked 19th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.81 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 43.2% of them vs. AO. If South Carolina does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 63.6% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 19th-worst in Division I.
South Carolina has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 312th in the country in positive momentum. South Carolina has also been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 323rd in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
South Carolina performs better against squads that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 3.93%, South Carolina is more efficient than normal 88% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 15% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, South Carolina usually performs worse than average. South Carolina is more efficient than normal 13% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.82%. In all other contests, South Carolina performs better than average 62% of the time.
South Carolina is typically worse vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.45, South Carolina performs above their norm 20% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 64% of the time.
