ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, SMU has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They have a record of 24-9 and are ranked 56th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 11 schools in the AAC (average ranking 105.9), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference.
SMU succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 46th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 108 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. SMU will make a strong effort to get off as many field goals close to the basket as they can. The ball-club is 28th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 58.2% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. SMU also does a pretty good job of protecting the ball when they have possession and not allowing quick and easy baskets off of their own turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 9.18, which ranks #40 in the country.
SMU plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 61st nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. SMU will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They allow AO to convert only 30.4% of their three-pointers (29th in the nation), 52.9% of their near-proximity attempts (24th), and 39.4% of their total shots from the field (21st). If SMU does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.15 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 23rd-worst in college basketball.
On the road, SMU performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 340th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, SMU often performs better than normal. SMU is more efficient than usual 70% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.29%. In their other contests, SMU performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
SMU does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.89, SMU performs above average 35% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
SMU performs worse against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.70%, SMU is more efficient than normal 38% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
