ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, SMU should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 15-17, they are currently rated #95 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 12) in the AAC (average ranking 102.8).
SMU has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #39 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 111 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. SMU is one of the very best when it comes to maximizing field goal opportunities. The team is ranked fourth in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 90.19 vs. AO. And when they do shoot, they make a fair portion of their shots. Ranked in the top-100 in field goal shooting percentage, the squad converts about 45.6% of their total attempts vs. AO. SMU also appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 17.49 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 21st in the NCAA).
Unfortunately, SMU is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 205th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 105 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. SMU allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 339th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.02 vs. AO. SMU also gives up far too many offensive rebounds and second chances to their opponents. The club has a rating of 16.63 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (333rd nationally).
When playing on the road, SMU performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 324th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
SMU does better vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.71%, SMU performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 32% of the time.
SMU performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 108.81, SMU is more efficient than normal 18% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 62% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, SMU usually performs better than average. SMU is more efficient than normal 65% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 98.39. In all other contests, SMU performs better than average 27% of the time.
