ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, SMU is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. They have a record of 17-16 and are ranked 83rd overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 12 schools in the AAC (average ranking 128.8), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
Demonstrating a preference for a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 13th-slowest pace in D1), SMU will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 69th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. SMU has had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #51 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.7% of their total attempts from the floor. SMU will also look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 56th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 12.95.
SMU plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 87th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. SMU has established itself as a team that cleans the offensive glass quite well. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 18.32 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 30th in the NCAA). SMU also has one of the better squads in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score. The team is ranked 48th in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 84.77 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 45.2% of them vs. AO.
SMU has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked eighth from the bottom in positive momentum. SMU has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 341st overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict. On the road, SMU performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked fifth from the bottom in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, SMU often performs worse than normal. SMU is more efficient than usual 26% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.79%. In their other contests, SMU performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
SMU does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 103.97, SMU performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 26% of the time.
SMU performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 97.98, SMU is more efficient than normal 26% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 80% of the time.
