ANALYSIS:
A top-25 caliber team, SMU will almost certainly present a challenging task for any Division I opponent. Ranked 25th overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 27-7. Of the 11 schools in the AAC (average ranking 150.2), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.

The primary strength for SMU this year is offense. The team is ranked 34th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 109 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. SMU does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 35.38 vs. AO, they are ranked ninth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 69.9%. SMU also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked tenth nationally). SMU is lastly an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 38.6% of their mid-range jumpers (39th in the nation), 65.3% of their near-proximity chances (24th), and 48.5% of their total shots from the field (11th) vs. AO.

SMU plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 44th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. SMU will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 31.6% of their mid-range jumpers (32nd in the nation), 54.0% of their near-proximity chances (47th), and 38.5% of their total shots from the field (18th). SMU also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.9% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 20th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 13.30, they're 42nd in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.

SMU is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 46th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
SORTABLE SCHEDULE / RESULTS:
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location.
Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
SMU performs better against squads that prefer the outside shot. When facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.01, SMU is more efficient than normal 64% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 26% of the time.
When playing teams that convert well from outside the arc, SMU usually performs worse than average. SMU is more efficient than normal 25% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.73%. In all other contests, SMU performs better than average 59% of the time.
